Olivia Rodrigo’s latest album Guts has given us many amazing songs, but “Lacy” truly struck a chord with her fans. The lyrics of this folk-pop ballad left people both moved and puzzled, and the Grammy-winning singer broke them during a recent appearance on Kelly Clarkson’s show.

Rodrigo was one of Clarkson’s final guests of 2023, and the talk show host couldn’t resist but gush about her amazing lyrics. One of the songs that came out during the show was “Lacy”, and Clarkson singled out “And I despise my jealous eyes and how hard they fell for you / Yeah, I despise my rotten mind and how much it worships you” as her favorite lyrics.

Rodrigo told Clarkson that it was “very emo of [her] writing that” and revealed how the lyrics for “Lacy” came together.

“I took a poetry class at USC… I wrote a poem called ‘Lacy’ for one of the assignments, and I really liked it. I’m like, ‘I’m gonna turn it into a song!’ so that’s sort of where that one came from,” explained Rodrigo.

“Lacy” captured Rodrigo’s obsession with another seemingly perfect female figure, and sparked speculations she wrote it about Taylor Swift or Sabrina Carpenter. She previously told The Los Angeles Times that it’s “not classy” to reveal who the song is about, and added she likes “more creative answers to who Lacy is — like it’s a past version of myself or the voice in my head telling me I’m not good enough.”
