While Dave Grohl has built a name for himself as a Foo Fighters frontman in the past two decades, older music fans will always think of him as Nirvana’s drummer first. Grohl recently spoke with GQ Magazine and admitted that he still can’t get himself to play a Nirvana song, even 24 years after Kurt Cobain’s suicide.

“I don’t put Nirvana records on, no,” Grohl said. “Although they are always on somewhere. I get in the car, they’re on. I go into a shop, they’re on. For me, it’s so personal. I remember everything about those records; I remember the shorts I was wearing when we recorded them or that it snowed that day. Still, I go back and find new meanings to Kurt’s lyrics. Not to seem revisionist, but there are times when it hits me. You go, ‘Wow, I didn’t realize he was feeling that way at the time.’”

Dave Grohl also revealed that he couldn’t listen to any music for years after Cobain’s death.

“For years I couldn’t even listen to any music, let alone a Nirvana song,” the 49 year old explained. “When Kurt died, every time the radio came on, it broke my heart.”

After starting his music career with hardcore punk band Scream, Dave Grohl joined Nirvana in 1990 in time to record 1991’s Nevermind. With Nevermind, Nirvana achieved mainstream success in no time and became arguably the biggest band of the ’90s. Still the story of Nirvana came to an end in 1994, when frontman Kurt Cobain decided to take his own life. After taking a break from music, Grohl decided to ditch the drums and take on guitar, forming Foo Fighters and becoming a rock ‘n’ roll legend we know and love today.
