Back in 1969, The Velvet Underground made a bunch of live recordings at Matrix night club in San Francisco, but these tracks never got a proper release at the time.

The fans only got to hear them in 2015 on CD, but not on vinyl. This is all about to change.

It was recently announced that the Polydor/UMe would be releasing these live recording on vinyl for the first time on July 12th. Titled The Complete Matrix Tapes, the release will come as an 8xLP box set, which will contain more than 40 songs.

According to the press release, the tracks were recorded between November 26th and November 27th, 1969. The Velvet Underground’s lineup at the time included Lou Reed, Sterling Morrison, Maureen Tucker, and Doug Yule. Founding member John Cale left the band a year before.

The Complete Matrix Tapes are highly appreciated by the fans of the band as The Velvet Underground was rarely recorded in the live surrounding.

Also, two songs on the release, “Over You” and “Sweet Bonnie Brown/It’s Too Much,” have never been officially released, and there is no indication that their studio recordings even exist.

Finally, some of the songs, like “Sweet Jane” and “New Age,” contain different or expanded lyrics.
