]]>Pink Friday 2 hit the shelves on December 8, 2023, and its release was preceded by singles “Super Freaky Girl”, “Red Ruby da Sleeze”, and “Last Time I Saw You”, the first of which became Minaj’s first solo single to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart.
Following its release, Pink Friday 2 easily soared to the top of the Billboard 200 chart, becoming the rapper’s third LP to do so. It also helped her break the tie with Foxy Brown for most No. 1 albums among female rappers, leaving her as the sole holder of this record.
One month after its release, Pink Friday 2 is still pushing boundaries on Spotify, and Chart Data reports it already surpassed the one billion mark. This makes it the fastest album by a female rapper to reach this coveted number, and it transformed Minaj into the first female rapper to have five albums with over one billion streams on Spotify.

]]>Spotify didn’t share too many details about Bad Bunny’s latest achievement, apart from the fact is surpassed the record previously held by Ed Sheeran’s ÷ (Divide). It’s no secret that Bad Bunny was always beloved among Spotify listeners, and he was named their artist of the year in 2022 for a third consecutive time.
Un Verano Sin Ti set many records long before its latest Spotify milestone, but Bad Bunny was never too concerned about the charts and the records while making this album.
“I never dreamed I wanted to be the biggest one or No. 1. I simply wanted to make it… I’ve been doing rhythms since I was 13 years old, writing, singing songs in my head… I did it because I loved it, and my only dream was to be able to make a living out of it,” he told Billboard.
Following its debut in May last year, Un Verano Sin Ti became the second all-Spanish language album to top the Billboard 200 chart and spent 13 weeks at no. 1.

It scored the biggest week for a song in the history of Spotify following its release, and it now crossed one billion streams in just 112 days, becoming the quickest song to ever do so.
“Flowers” was released as the lead single from Cyrus’ latest album Endless Summer Vacation, which hit the shelves on March 10. It debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and also produced singles “The River” and “Jaded”.
It’s widely rumored that “Flowers” references the singer’s divorce from her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth. Cyrus never addressed these speculations directly, but she confirmed that Endless Summer Vacation contains some shady lyrics.
“There’s subtle shade. There’s, you know, honesty and truth, and there’s some wisdom, and there’s some humor. And there’s some heaviness and depth,” Cyrus explained in her Disney+ special.

]]>If you’re planning on getting fit as part of your 2019 resolution, you’re going to need a banging work-out playlist to keep motivation up when Netflix is more tempting than the gym.
Now, Spotify have shared infographics on the music that the world likes to work-out to. Using mainstream stats, they have compiled a list of the ultimate songs for going hard, not going home.
At the top of the list is the appropriately named “Till I Collapse” by Eminem. The song has topped the work-out charts for three years in a row and for good reason. It’s difficult not to feel ready for anything when the song is playing, even if the ‘anything’ involves dragging ourselves to the gym.
Also on the list is Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” and Kanye West’s “Stronger” and “Power.” For the 36-55 age group, it’s good to see that Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” is still going strong.

]]>Artists Make Plenty Of Money From Streaming
You may have heard that artists don’t get paid very well for streaming. This isn’t the case. In fact, Tycho, who have been nominated for a Grammy award, make 53% of their income from streaming!
Not bad, right? Artists who own their own rights get 100% of the streaming revenue. It only goes down when their publishers and labels take their cut, and that’s something the artists were paid for in advance.
Streaming Is Good For New Acts
We’ve all been told that streaming benefits the established acts over the new ones. Yet, streaming has created plenty of breakout acts such as Robin Shulz, Danny Ocean, and Lil Uzi Vert.
Streaming helps new artists break into new territories at no cost to themselves. This, in turn, raises their profile and their earnings.
Streaming Didn’t Kill The Album
Downloading killed the album. When people could pirate a whole record at no cost – they only ever listened to the tracks they liked. They stopped listening to the whole thing.
In contrast, streaming may help albums because there’s no cost to trying the whole thing rather than playing it safe and sticking to what people know.
So, there you have it – streaming is not heralding the death of the music industry, in fact, it’s helping new artists, making people money and helping to shore up the album too!

]]>Artists are generally happy about streaming services. Spotify, for example, has a generous deal with artists, labels and other license holders which ensures that everyone gets paid fairly.
Unfortunately, there is one service that isn’t paying its way and that service is YouTube.
Zoe Keating, who plays the cello, was streamed 230,000 times on Spotify and earned $940. In contrast, she was streamed 1.42 million times on YouTube but only picked up $261!
That means YouTube is paying roughly 1/20th of what Spotify pays per listen.
Artists feel that YouTube is ripping them off. YouTube says this isn’t true. They claim to be paying what they can.
Record labels said they felt that they were forced to license to YouTube “on the cheap” because they were getting nothing at all for a long period of time.
There is a light at the end of the tunnel, however. YouTube has recently announced that a subscription service will be forthcoming and that rates may go up when this launches. So, maybe YouTube won’t kill the industry after all.
