The race for Spotify’s most-streamed song of 2024 was unpredictable until the very last minute, but Billie Eilish eventually came out victorious. She took the top spot with her sleeper hit “Birds of a Feather”, scoring a narrow victory over Sabrina Carpenter’s “Espresso”.
The race between “Birds of a Feather” and “Espresso” was pretty tight, but Eilish managed to overtake Carpenter on the last day of the year. According to the X (formerly known as Twitter) account Chart Data, only 650,000 streams separate the songs. “Birds of a Feather” crossed 1,775,000,000 streams, while “Espresso” is still around 500,000 streams away from reaching that mark.
“Birds of a Feather” was released as the second single from Eilish’s latest album Hit Me Hard and Soft, and it peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart. Eilish first previewed it through a teaser trailer for the Netflix series Heartstopper and released it as a single after it became a huge hit on social media.
“Birds of a Feather” will be in the running for several awards at this year’s Grammys, including song of the year, record of the year, and best pop solo performance. Eilish is in the running for seven awards overall, including album of the year and best pop vocal album with Hit Me Hard and Soft.
