New and authorized documentary about Sly Stone, enigmatic frontman of Sly and the Family Stone, is in the works. According to the reports, the documentary already entered production and an exclusive interview with the normally withdrawn Stone was filmed. Besides the interview, the documentary will also feature extensive archival footage, photographs and a soundtrack with Stone’s songs. The title and a release date will be announced in the coming months.

Derik Murray, who produced pieces like Facing Escobar and I Am Heath Ledger, is one of the initiators of the project.

“In the annals of pop music, certain artists are more than just innovators and more than just icons. Certain artists are avatars – the manifestation of an idea,” said Murray in a statement. “For Sly Stone, that idea was to create a diverse band that embraced a kaleidoscope of musical and cultural styles, that stand unparalleled to this day.”

“This collaboration with legendary artist Sly Stone will deliver an epic and important film in the history of popular music,” added co-executive producer Ron Weisner. “After refusing the spotlight for decades, Sly has finally opened up to share his amazing story on camera about everything: life, love and music.”

Sly Stone was a musical prodigy and started his career when he was seven years old. Still, his major breakthrough came with Sly and the Family Stone, a band who played a crucial role in the emergence of rock, funk, and psychedelia in the 1960s. The group released seven studio albums before disbanding in 1975, after which Stone launched his solo career while occasionally using the Sly and the Family Stone name.
