Patti Smith has shared a poem on Instagram wishing Greta Thunberg a happy birthday.
Thunberg has just celebrated her 17th birthday. The environmental activist spent her special day participating in a school strike to pressure the government into making the changes necessary to fight climate change. Thunberg does this every Friday.
To celebrate Greta turning 17, Patti Smith wrote a poem in tribute to the activist. She shared the poem on her Instagram beside a photo of the young icon.
The poem reads:
“This is
Greta Thunberg, turning
seventeen today, asking
for no accolade, no gifts,
save we not be neutral.
The Earth knows its kind,
just as all deities, just as
animals and the healing
spring. Happy birthday
to Greta, who stood today,
as every Friday, refusing
to be neutral.”
Pati Smith is one of the many artists who has spoken out in support of Greta Thunberg and her environmental cause. Billie Eilish also recently spoke out praising Greta and declaring herself a supporter of the case.
