Fans following the veteran rapper’s Twitter account were in for a pleasant surprise on Thursday, as she announced a “collection of new songs” coming out.
And the best part? The release date was midnight that day!
The new album, Iconology, has been teased and hinted about some months ago in an April Instagram post that talked about her finishing a big project, but the nature of the project, and its release date, were not made public until now.
Elliott’s tweet read: “This year has been a tremendous year for me…I am humbled and grateful. THANK YOU for allowing me to smell the roses. You, my fans, and God are the reason I am here and have celebrated every milestone with me! So, I have a SURPRISE for you…”
She immediately followed it up with the art cover of the new album, and continued to say: “At midnight tonight I’m dropping a collection of new songs! Let’s #ThrowItBack to a time when music just felt good and made us want to dance! Sincerely, Dr. Melissa “Missy” Elliott #ICONOLOGY”
From Elliott’s debut album, 1997’s Supa Dupa Fly, to her previous release in 2005, The Cookbook, she had released six albums in twelve years. The 14 silent years that have now come to an end with Iconology have been much, much too long.
