Lil Nas X is one of the artists with the most interesting career trajectories in Hip Hop, and he manages to break new grounds with each new song. That’s certainly the case with his latest single “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” which became a viral hit in the blink of an eye.

The Tanu Muino-directed video is full of Biblical and mythology-inspired scenes. Just like the song itself, this music video is all about unapologetically embracing who you are after years of hiding your true self.

The music video opens with words, “In life, we hide the parts of ourselves we don’t want the world to see. We lock them away. We tell them, ‘No.’ We banish them. But here, we don’t,” cementing the message that the rapper was trying to send with this song.

While discussing this song with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe, Lil Nas X said it’s brought new confidence out of him and made him realize he can do what he wants to do in his own artistic career.

“Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” will be featured on the rapper’s upcoming debut album Montero, set to come out later this year.
