Lil Nas X has been teasing his comeback for quite some time, and he’s finally back with his first single in over a year. The cinematic visual for his highly-anticipated new song “J Christ” is here, and it’s been inspired by “the man who had the greatest comeback of all time.”

The music video for “J Christ” was written and directed by the rapper himself and he shot it in Mexico City. The video opens with lookalikes of Taylor Swift, Kanye West, Mariah Carey, and many other pop culture icons approaching the gates of heaven, to discover Lil Nas X waiting for them.

As the video progresses, we get to see the Grammy-winning rapper play with religious imagery, while also making several cheeky meta references. We get to watch him face Satan on the basketball court, climb the steps of the Met Gala, and dance in a cheerleading uniform—all while facing Judgement Day.

This music video marks Lil Nas X’s solo directorial debut, but the influence of his previous visuals is pretty obvious, most notably “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)”, which scored a Grammy nod for the best music video in 2022.

“J Christ” has been released as the lead single from the rapper’s upcoming second studio album, and he’s yet to share its release date and title with the world.
