This year’s list of Oscar nominees for best original song featured a couple of surprising choices, but the top contenders made the cut. Lady Gaga and Kendrick Lamar were front-runners in this race from the very start, and both received nods once the list of nominees was finally unveiled.

Mother Monster is in the running for an Oscar, alongside Mark Ronson, Anthony Rossomando, and Andrew Wyatt. They co-wrote smash-hit power ballad “Shallow”, from musical drama A Star Is Born. Experts are predicting this song will come out victorious come Oscar night, and it already scored a Golden Globe in the same category.

Kendrick Lamar received his nod with a team of musicians and songwriters who gave us the musical wonder that is “All the Stars”. This song was featured in superhero flick Black Panther, which will be competing in seven categories, including best picture.

“I’ll Fight” from the groundbreaking documentary RBG and “The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns also made the cut, after many experts predicted they will. The biggest shocker was inclusion of the original song “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, since no one expected this film will receive any nods.

This year’s Academy Awards will take place on February 24, and all the nominated songs will be performed during the ceremony.
