It was just a matter of time before Khalid made it to the top the charts, and his second studio album was the one to get him over the finish line. Free Spirit is the R&B star’s first record to top the Billboard 200 chart.

Free Spirit debuted at no. 1 with 202,000 album-equivalent units in the first week alone. Topping the charts isn’t the only amazing thing that happened to Khalid this weekend. He also made his Coachella debut, where several of his collaborators – including Billie Eilish, Halsey, and Normani – made a special appearance.

Khalid previously described Free Spirit as his best work to date and said it possesses a “level of maturity” that his debut album didn’t have.

“The music I’m writing right now is very self-reflective. I’m slowly but surely centering on myself and what I’m going through… I feel like I’ve learned so much about myself and how I like to write that it’s allowed the music to improve,” Khalid explained in an interview with Billboard.
