John Legend just shared a new single titled “Don’t Need to Sleep”. The touching track is part of the soundtrack for the documentary We Dare to Dream, which was directed by Waad Al-Kateab and co-produced by Legend.

“Don’t Need to Sleep” is a piano-forward song with lyrics that ring with hopefulness, perseverance, optimism, and sacrifice. You can listen to it below.

“I am honored to contribute an original song to ‘We Dare to Dream,’” said Legend back in October when his involvement in the documentary was first announced. “Waad Al-Kateab has created an important film, and I hope “Don’t Need to Sleep” does the documentary and its extraordinary subjects justice.”

We Dare to Dream tells the story of refugee athletes from Cameroon, Iran, Syria, and South Sudan and their quest to secure a spot at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. The documentary was released in early December on streaming service Peacock and received generally positive reviews.

“Don’t Need to Sleep” is Legend’s first new song since the singer released his ninth studio album, Legend, in 2022. However, the Grammy Award-winner has kept himself busy with other projects since then,  making several guest appearances, including being featured on the track “On Time” from Metro Boomin’s record Heroes & Villains.
