The way we discover new music is much different than it was a couple of years ago. The sudden popularity of TikTok has changed the way young people come across brand-new artists, and this app actually gave us some of the biggest hits of 2019.

The songs we’re talking about, including “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo, saw the light of day long before TikTok came into the picture, but this app gave them something classic channels of promotion just couldn’t do.

It gave them a little push and led to countless memes that quickly left TikTok, and overflown the rest of social media platforms. People decided they wanted to hear them in full after being exposed to a couple of catchy beats, and their viral popularity on this app quickly led to something bigger.

“Old Town Road” currently holds the title of the longest-reigning no. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, and we’re yet to see if this app is going to put another hit of that magnitude on the map. Arizona Zervas had signed with Columbia Records after his song “Roxanne” found viral fame on TikTok, and we can’t wait to discover other rising stars using this app in 2020.
