Michael Stipe is back with his first-ever solo single!

Stipe, who was the frontman of indie rock pioneers R.E.M., took an extended hiatus from music after he left his former band about eight years ago. It was only a few years ago that rumors started flying that he was starting to gather materials for an eventual solo album. Although Stipe has been musically active with R.E.M. since 1980, this would mark the first time in his career that he is creating music by himself.

The song is called “Your Capricious Soul,” and according to Stripe it was inspired by the environmental social movement know as Extinction Rebellion.

“I took a long break from music, and I wanted to jump back in,” Stipe said in a press release. “I love ‘Your Capricious Soul’ — it’s my first solo work. I want to add my voice to this exciting shift in consciousness.”

Regarding the earlier-than-expected timing of the single, Stiple explained: “Extinction Rebellion gave me the incentive to push the release and not wait. Our relationship to the environment has been a lifelong concern, and I now feel hopeful—optimistic, even. I believe we can bring the kind of change needed to improve our beautiful planet earth, our standing and our place on it.”
