Coming of Age Musical “Sing Street” to Get Stage Adaptation

Jack Reynor and Ferdia Walsh-Peelo in "Sing Street"

John Carney delivered one of the most refreshing and lighthearted movies of 2016 with Sing Street. His underappreciated project will finally get the attention it deserves thanks to the upcoming stage adaptation.

Despite its critical acclaim and several notable award nominations, Sing Street failed to find mainstream success when it first came out. It centered around a shy boy growing up in 1980s Dublin, who starts a rock band to impress a girl he likes.

What set Sing Street apart from other musicals with straight-forward story-line was the fact it actually had an amazing and memorable soundtrack. Original songs “Up” and “Drive It Like You Stole It” stayed with viewers long after end credits, and this teen musical become a sleeper hit with a devoted following.

Its stage adaptation sounds pretty promising since masterminds behind it have a great track record. Carney’s 2007 musical “Once” was also adapted into a hit play, which went on to win a total of seven Tonys!
