In the runup to their upcoming album Giants Of All Sizes, Elbow has shared a brand new single, “Empires.”

The new track is distinguishably an Elbow track as a result of Guy Garvey’s unique voice. Musically and lyrically though, the band seem to be trying out something new.

“Baby / Empires crumble all the time / Pay it no mind / You just happened to witness mine,” Garvey sings. Distorted organs chime in between his soulful moans, and the bass is dominant throughout the track. The vibe is loose and at times, it sounds improvised.

“We thought the studio would give us inner-city vibes but we were on the edge of Hamburg which meant we spent more time in Clouds Hill [Studios] rather than exploring,” producer and keyboardist Craig Potter said about the new album.

“With time to spare, we sat around and played together in a way we haven’t for a long time and experimented and improvised with the music which led to the looser feel you hear on ‘Empires’”.

Giants Of All Sizes will be released October 11.
