Five years since their critically acclaimed album AM, Arctic Monkeys are set to release their follow up titled Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. The album is set to drop on May 11th and according to the early reviews, it might sound different than what the fans expect. That might have something to do with the music that Arctic Monkeys’ frontman Alex Turner was listening to while he was writing the band’s new album.

While talking to Mojo in late April, Turner shared a handwritten note with the magazine which contained “the tunes buzzing in his head around the writing and recording of Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino.”

The list contains a whole array of music artists, from Nina Simone, Nino Rota, and Ennio Morricone to Marvin Gaye, The Stills-Young Band, Rolling Stones, and Joe Cooker. Turner ended his note with: “Danny, In the words of Joe Cocker. Rock on in one way or another. All The Best.”

In case you want to listen to the songs that Alex Turner used as an inspiration for Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino, the Monkeys fans have already made a Spotify playlist that you can check out below.

The interesting thing about the Arctic Monkeys’ new record were the rumors that Alex Turner wrote the songs included on Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino for his solo album but ended up changing his mind. The 32-year-old musician decided to set the record straight in his recent interview with Germany’s Intro.

“I was never interested in making a solo album,” said Turner. “I am a part of this band and one would disrespect the other. Nevertheless, I wanted to make this music, it was in me. When you compose on the piano, you automatically get different results than on the guitar. And it was important to me to say goodbye to the realism of most of the Arctic Monkeys stuff.”
