Slipknot is one of the most recognizable bands of their generation. Their heavy music and fantastic live shows got them fans all over the world and propelled them as one of the most important heavy metal acts of today.

Despite their huge popularity, there are numerous things you probably didn’t know about Slipknot, and that may surprise. Read about them below.

Inspired by Video Games

The lyrics for the songs on Slipknot’s first album Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat., was mostly inspired by a video game from 1992 titled Werewolf: The Apocalypse.

Spirit Of The Tour

One of the band’s key characteristics is wearing clown masks during live shows. The interesting thing is that the band never washes those masks when on tour. According to them, this way the “spirit of the tour” is carried along wherever they go.

Hidden Identity

Speaking about masks. Slipknot refused to take them off during interviews or meet-and-greets in the first few years of their career in order to keep a certain mystery around the band. The band was fully unmasked in 2006 for their documentary Voliminal: Inside the Nine.

Cat Lover

The band’s lead guitarist Mick Thompson can come off as a scary guy at first. But in fact, he is a really friendly guy who absolutely loves cats.

The Quiet One

Keyboardist Craig Jones is known as the most private and quiet member of the band. He was nicknamed by others as “The Quiet One,” and this is why his mask has a zipper on the mouth.

Shawn Crahan’s Welding Life

Before he got to bang the drums for Slipknot, Shawn Crahan worked as a welder. He is so crafty in this that he made his own percussions.

Crazy Stage Antics

During their live shows, members of Slipknot do all kind of crazy things. While this is amusing for the audience, it doesn’t exactly end well for them. Turntablist Sid Wilson once set himself on fire by accident suffering third-degree burns on his leg, while breaking both of his heels on another occasion. Percussionist Shawn Crahan also had his fair share of injuries including slashing his forehead on a keg, splitting his collarbone, and dislocating a shoulder.
