The National’s new album will feature several exciting collaborations, and they just shared one of them with the world. They joined forces with Phoebe Bridgers for the new single “Your Mind Is Not Your Friend”, and it’s truly the best of both worlds.

According to the band’s press release, this song “confronts the entanglements of the habitual mind and the overwhelming nature of scrutiny” and frontman Matt Berninger wrote it while dealing with writer’s block. He tried to overcome it by grabbing a random book from a shelf, and its plot inspired him to write “Your Mind Is Not Your Friend”.

“The book starts off with the narrator on a voyage near the Arctic Circle, and that image of being adrift helped me to write about feeling disconnected and lost and lacking in purpose,” he explained in a statement.

The music video for this track was directed by Phoebe Bridgers’ brother Jackson. It was filmed at a park in Los Angeles and sees Berninger and his brother Tom frolic in a park, trying to relive their childhood memories.

“Your Mind Is Not Your Friend” has been released as the fourth single from The National’s upcoming album First Two Pages of Frankenstein, following “Tropic Morning News”, “New Order T-Shirt”, and “Eucalyptus”. This record will hit the shelves on April 28, and it will also feature collaborations with Sufjan Stevens and Taylor Swift.
