The Killers gave us one of the defining songs of the 2000s with “Mr. Brightside”, and its popularity isn’t fading away. Two decades after its release, “Mr. Brightside” became the UK’s most streamed song in Spotify history.

The Killers’ smash hit has been making waves on Spotify for quite some time and broke the UK chart record in 2021 by spending 260 weeks in the Top 100 of the UK’s singles chart. That number rose to 382 weeks in the meantime, and “Mr. Brightside” is now officially the most streamed song of all time on UK Spotify.

While discussing the song’s legacy in an interview with The Rolling Stones in honor of its 15th anniversary in 2018, frontman Brandon Flowers admitted he was trying to channel his inner David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Oasis on this track.

“There’s an anthemic quality in the pre-choruses, and we learned a lot about things like that from listening to Oasis… I think the anthemic quality is me trying to beat [Oasis’] ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ or ‘Where the Streets Have No Name,’” said Flowers.

“Mr. Brightside” was released as one of the singles from The Killers’ debut studio album Hot Fuss from 2004, and it’s widely regarded as one of the defining songs of the early 2000s.
