In today’s edition of “covers you never thought will happen,” we have Latin pop diva Shakira going punk. Shakira recently posted a video on her social media, which shows her doing a cover of Green Day’s 1994’s hit single “Basket Case.”

The Colombian singer captioned the post by writing: “Me, being a basket case with my producer.”

Her pop cover of this punk classic immediately went viral and ended up even capturing the attention of Green Day’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. After hearing Shakira’s rendition of “Basket Case,” Amstrong shared the video with his followers on Instagram and ended up giving the cover his approval with a black heart emoji. Check it out below.

“Basket Case” was released as a second single from Green Day’s third studio album Dookie. Upon its release, the song gained critical acclaim while also spending five weeks on the top of Billboard US Alternative Songs charts. It was also nominated at 1995’s Grammy Awards for Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, but ended up losing to Aerosmith’s “Crazy.”
