It’s already been three years since the release of Selena Gomez’s last album Rare, and she’s finally plotting its follow-up. She discussed her upcoming LP in a recent Vogue Mexico cover story and described it as a “real pop record” with no sad songs.

The main topic that Gomez wants to explore on her next album is freedom from the constraints she had when she was 20. Unlike her last record Rare, which tackled the themes of self-love and self-empowerment, while touching upon some of the lowest points of her life, the singer’s next album won’t feature any “sad songs”.

Gomez told Vogue Mexico it took her a long time to start working on new songs because she didn’t have anything to write about after being so used to making “sad girl music”. She wasn’t going through anything that was breaking her down during the writing process, and the sound of her next LP will reflect that.

“I want to try to find ways to make good pop music, with a message that really means something. When people hear [the new album], whether they like it or not, I hope they say ‘That sounds really happy,'” said Gomez.

She also said that her upcoming album will be a “real pop record” with an R&B moment, but added that her latest single “Single Soon” isn’t representative of the whole album.
