Last month, Red Hot Chili Peppers announced a reunion with long-running guitarist John Frusciante. The band also confirmed some festival dates that they will play. Now it has been confirmed by the band’s drummer Chad Smith that this year will also see a new album by the band and its returning member.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Smith said that he was told not to talk about the band, but continued anyway. “Yes, John is back in the band, and everyone knows that. We’re psyched. The festivals are the only shows booked. For now, we’ll mostly be concentrating on new songs and writing a new record. We’re all real excited to make new music,”  he told the magazine. However, he didn’t provide any details about the album.

This is the third stint of Frusciante in the band. He first joined RHCP in 1988 and was a member until 1992. He then came back to the band in 1998 and departed again in 2009. He was part of some of the band’s most successful albums; 1991’s Blood Sex Sugar Magic and 1998’s Californication.
