When our moms talk about music, we get into eye-roll mode, because mom’s music just isn’t as edgy as ours. We forget, however, that it was mom who influenced our music taste when we were growing up. Without her, our Spotify playlists would be entirely different.

So here’s to ten albums that my mom loves.

Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me (The Cure)

My mom was an old school goth and when it comes to The Cure, the earlier the record the better.

The Seldom Seen Kid (Elbow)

I suspect that all moms love Elbow, but my mom has his entire collection in her car.

Sex, Blood, Sugar, Magik (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Everyone likes the Chilis but my mom digs this album the most, describing it as “funk punk.”

A Guide to Love, Loss & Desperation (The Wombats)

My mom and I saw The Wombats live when I was 15. I loved it, she loved it and was all just a really good time.

The Very Best Of The Smiths (The Smiths)

I once had to endure my mom singing “There Is A Light That Never Goes Out” at a karaoke bar. It was interesting.

Radiohead: The Best Of (Radiohead)

As a Radiohead superfan, I shun my mother for listening to the “best of” instead of the back catalog. Still, I would do well to remember that my mom’s trusty best of album is what got me into the band in the first place.

Blue Lines (Massive Attack)

My mom actually has really, really good taste.

Gold Mother (James)

Another mom album which is actually pretty awesome.

The XX (The XX)

There was a time when my mom was listening to The XX on repeat. This was tragically before I had even heard of them.

The Trick To Life (The Hoosiers)

A real blast from the past for most of us, but my mom still has this in her car.
