Madonna dropped one of the most highly-anticipated albums of the summer when Madame X hit the shelves this month, and her fans couldn’t wait to get their copy. Her new record immediately hit no. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, becoming her ninth album to do so.

Madame X easily topped the chart with 95,000 album-equivalent units sold since its release on June 14th.

Bruce Springsteen made it to no. 2 with his new album Western Stars, and was closely followed by Billie Eilish’s debut LP When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which came out all the way back on March 29th and repeatedly topped the chart.

Madonna did a great job promoting her new album with a series of amazing singles, including the Maluma collaboration “Medellín.”

She discussed Madame X in depth in an interview with Jo Wiley for BBC Radio 2, and explained how her dance teacher Martha Graham inspired her to embrace this nickname.

“She said, ‘I’m going to start calling you Madame X from now on,’ and I said ‘Why?’ and she said, ‘Because you’re like a secret agent. You’re like a spy. Every time I see you, you look different. I pass you in the hallway, I’m not sure it’s you,’” recalled Madonna.
