Fans lost it when Madonna announced she’d perform for free in Rio de Janeiro, and this concert was one for history books. The last stop of The Celebration Tour attracted 1.6 million people to the iconic Copacabana Beach, making history as the largest standalone concert ever held.

When Madonna first announced her free concert in Rio, she described it as “her biggest gig yet” and “an unforgettable concert in one of the world’s most beautiful settings.” It was the last stop on her The Celebration Tour, and the Queen of Pop decided to make it free, as a way of thanking her fans “for celebrating more than four decades of her music over the course of the epic global run of the tour.”

Madonna took the stage at Copacabana Beach on May 4 and welcomed the audience by saying, “Here we are in the most beautiful place in the world. This place is magic.” She went on to perform some of her biggest hits and was joined by several special guests, including Anitta and Pabllo Vittar.

According to the city officials, approximately 1.6 million people turned up for the concert, and this number is quite historic. Copacabana Beach has attracted more people during past New Year’s Eve events, but this marks the largest crowd in history for a concert held by a standalone artist.
