The English city of Liverpool, best known as the home of the iconic band the Beatles, is set to host the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. Liverpool is taking on the hosting duties on behalf of this year’s winner Ukraine, after beating off strong competition from Glasgow.

Next year’s Eurovision Song Contest is now set to take place at the Liverpool Arena between May 9-13, 2023. This announcement comes after the UK agreed to host Eurovision on behalf of Ukraine due to security concerns caused by the Russian invasion of this country.

Eurovision Song Contest executive supervisor Martin Österdahl described Liverpool as the ideal place to host the 67th Eurovision Song Contest because this city is synonymous with music, and the venue Liverpool Arena meets all the requirements to stage a global event of this scale.

“We have been very impressed with the passion the city has shown in embracing the Contest and their inclusive ideas for placing last year’s winners, Ukraine, front and center when thousands of fans visit next May,” said Österdahl in a statement.

Liverpool defeated Glasgow in the final round of the competition, but the shortlist of potential host cities also included Birmingham, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, and Sheffield. This will mark the first Eurovision Song Contest to be held in the UK in 25 years, when the 43rd Eurovision Song Contest was hosted in Birmingham in 1998.
