Metallica has been pretty busy since their last album, Hardwired… to Self-Destruct came out three years ago. They’ve been touring almost non-stop, released beer and whiskey brands, and are even working on a children’s book. But according to drummer Lars Ulrich, they’ve also never been happier.

“This may be the best tour we’ve ever done in Europe,” said Ulrich in an interview he gave to San Francisco Chronicle from Poland.

“It wasn’t because of the numbers, even though the numbers are kind of crazy,” he continued. “The reason this is the best tour is because we feel more connected internally than we ever have before. We’re connecting more with the audience and with the fans and the people who are there to share the experience. I can’t quite put my finger on it.”

While the main lyricist of Metallica is James Hetfield, Ulrich can get pretty poetic himself, as is evidenced by his next attempt to explain why the band is getting along so well with each other as of late: “Over the course of a summer like this, you find yourself occasionally, over a late-night beverage or the right company, trying to intellectualize or get overly analytical about why it’s working at the moment. It’s very hard for me, at least in a sound bite, to clarify that or articulate it.”

Well, whatever that elusive it is, we just hope it lasts for as long as possible!
