Pink Floyd’s track “Echoes,” released on 1971’s Meddle, represents an exceptional music piece that perfectly mixtures instrumentals, ambient sound, and improvisation. Besides its standalone value, the song is believed to have laid the groundwork for the sound of the band’s iconic album The Dark Side of the Moon.

Due to these reasons, and the fact that its 23 minutes long, there haven’t been many artists who dared to engage with this song and try to cover it. Those that did, hardly did it justice.

But Mexican acoustic duo Rodrigo y Gabriela didn’t let that to discourage them, and they ended up recording a true masterpiece. Their version of “Echoes” is something anyone who calls himself Pink Floyd fan has to check out.

Rodrigo y Gabriela’s cover of the song, which will be part of their new studio album Mettavolution, defers from the original by being shorter (19 minutes) and being recorded as instrumental, with the original vocals interpreted as guitar parts. Also, the duo decided to let the sound come to them, and engaged in short jam sessions on several occasions.

You can hear the cover below.

“Echoes” was written in 1970 by all four Pink Floyd’s members – David Gilmour, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright – and was the sixth and final track on Meddle. Besides the original version, there is also a shorter form that can be found on compilation album Echoes: The Best of Pink Floyd. The band last played it live during their 1987’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour, while Gilmour made it part of his 2006’s On an Island Tour.
