We don’t usually see rockers covering rap songs, but that didn’t stop Extreme’s frontman Gary Cherone to give it a go. Cherone, who is also known for a short stint as a vocalist for Van Halen, recently shared his rendition of Kanye West’s “God Is.”

According to Cherone, who released the cover for Easter Sunday, although he isn’t a big Kanye West fan, he was intrigued by the song and wanted to put his mark on it.

“I’m not the biggest Kanye fan, but I kept hearing about his new record so I checked it out, and I just kept going back to that song,” said Cherone in an interview with Newsweek. “I just wanted to sing it in my rock voice.”

Cherone added that he hopes the cover can inspire his fans to check out West’s version: “Obviously, Kanye and I come from two different worlds. Maybe I can introduce my audience to that record and move them to check out the original version.”

Besides recording covers, Gary Cherone is reportedly also busy working on a new album with Extreme. In several previous interviews, the members of the band confirmed they have new material on the way but are yet to reveal a release date. The group’s most recent release was 2008’s Saudades de Rock.
