Ed Sheeran is no stranger to winning major awards, and he just added an Emmy to his impressive collection. The British hitmaker won his first Emmy Award for outstanding original music and lyrics for “A Beautiful Game” from the Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso.

“A Beautiful Game” was featured in the final episode of Season 3 of Ted Lasso, and it served as the proper sendoff to our favorite soccer coach. Ed Sheeran shared his Emmy for this song with his fellow co-writers Max Martin and Foy Vance and thanked the Television Academy for honoring them with an emotional post on social media.

Sheeran apologized for not accepting the award in person at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards, explaining he’s currently touring across Asia, and also recalled co-writing and recording this song alongside Martin and Vance.

“Two years ago this month we got in together and wrote a song about love and football, and how it is always about the journey rather than the destination. I recorded a crowd at one of my stadium shows for it singing the final chant to keep it in the footie vibes,” wrote Sheeran on Instagram.

Sam Ryder’s “Fought & Lost” from Ted Lasso was also up for an Emmy Award for outstanding original music and lyrics, along with songs from Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia, Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q, Amazon Prime Video’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Roku’s Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
