Given the success Dave Grohl had as Nirvana’s drummer and the frontman of Foo Fighters, it is easy to forget he has recorded two albums with punkers Scream, 1988’s No More Censorship, and 1989’s Fumble. Now, the band has decided to reissue No More Censorship, giving the fans an opportunity to witness the drum playing abilities of teenage Dave Grohl. No More Censorship was reissued as a Record Store Day Black Friday exclusive in 2017, and will now see its official release on April 27th under the name NMC17.
A few years back, photographer Naomi Petersen discovered the No More Censorship original master tapes in a storage unit and gave them to the band’s vocalist Pete Stahl. Stahl then passed them on to Grohl, who did a remix at his 606 Studio. The release will contain bonus content including booklets, writings, and photos.
“This record was written and recorded during Reagan’s presidency. US foreign policy was being disruptive in Central and Latin America, Iran-Contra… Art and music was being censored. Ed Meese, Ronald’s Attorney General was appointed to do a report on the effect of pornography on society,” said Pete Stahl in a press release. “Hearings were held in Congress about lyrics and albums, and warnings were placed on album covers. One bitter example being Dead Kennedys, who were taken to court over the Frankenchirst album’s Geiger poster. SCREAM raised money to help in the Dead Kennedys court battle, and more widely participated in benefits to raise money to fight this oppression. So much of what was going on then is still so relevant today. History repeats.”
Formed in 1981 in Washington, Scream went on to release five studio albums, last one being Fumble. When Dave Grohl left to join Nirvana, the rest of the band soon decided to call it quits shortly after. Scream reunited in 2009, and since then they have been touring extensively.
