Lana Del Rey just treated fans to a haunting cover of Joni Mitchell.
Last night (October 2) at WaMu Theater in Seattle, Del Rey performed for fans as part of her album tour. In addition to playing a selection of songs from her latest album Norman F***ing Rockwell, Del Rey offered up her own take on Michell’s “For Free.”
The “Videogames” singer previously covered the track at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena last week. This time, one of her fans caught the whole performance on their phone. The cover follows her studio take on Sublime’s “Doin’ Time” for which she has received significant critical acclaim.
“For Free” is a track from Mitchell’s Ladies Of The Canyon (1970). Del Rey’s version is stripped back and features her singing with nothing but piano accompaniment. She sings: “Now me I play for fortunes / and those velvet curtain calls / I’ve got a black limousine / and two gentlemen / escorting me to the halls.”
