If the name Brittany Howard sounds familiar, you probably know her as the lead singer of the indie band Alabama Shakes. Recently, the singer made the decision to go solo, and her upcoming debut album is on its way.

In preparation for the big drop, Howard has released the single “History Repeats” from the forthcoming record.

The album is titled Jamie, and it will pay tribute to her late sister, who lost her battle against cancer when the pair were teenagers.

“The title is in memoriam, and she definitely did shape me as a human being,” Howard explained. “But the record is not about her. It’s about me. I’m pretty candid about myself, and who I am and what I believe. Which is why I needed to do it on my own.”

Speaking about the single, Howard explained: “‘History Repeats’ is as much a personal song as it is a song about us as a human species. Our times of success may propel us forward, but our repeating failures hold us back from evolving into harmony.”
