The Juno Awards unveiled their list of nominees for the upcoming ceremony, bringing a couple of major shockers our way. It wasn’t a surprise to see Justin Bieber and The Weeknd score some of the major nominations with five each, but they were both surpassed by Charlotte Cardin with six.

Unlike the rest of the major contenders at this year’s Juno Awards, Cardin still isn’t a household name outside of Canada. She was previously nominated for two Juno Awards, but her debut studio album Phoenix truly put her on the map last year and hit no. 1 in Canada.

Cardin will be competing against Bieber, The Weeknd, Shawn Mendes, JP Saxe for one of the ceremony’s biggest awards—artist of the year. They’re all competing for album of the year, with the exception of the Weeknd, who didn’t drop a new album in the eligibility period. Cardin, Bieber, and The Weekend will also be going head to head in several major categories, including the fan choice award and single of the year.

The 2022 Juno Awards will be held at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on May 15th, marking the first time since 2019 that the ceremony is taking place in person. The Shang-Chi star Simu Liu will be in charge of hosting the awards show.
