Abel Tesfaye embraced his alter ego The Weeknd after he “left one weekend and never came back home”, but he might not be going by this stage name for much longer. The Canadian hitmaker recently revealed that he wants to “kill The Weknd” and make music under his birth name.

The Weeknd recently set down with W Magazine to talk about his upcoming HBO series The Idol with Lily Rose Depp, but this wasn’t the only topic of discussion. He also revealed that he’s experiencing somewhat of an identity crisis of late, which could have consequences on his music career going forward.

“It’s getting to a place and a time where I’m getting ready to close the Weeknd chapter. I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely trying to shed that skin and be reborn,” he told W Magazine.

He also revealed that his next album will probably be his last hurrah as The Weeknd because he said everything that he can say under this moniker. He currently has five studio albums under his belt, and his latest LP Dawn FM came out last year and produced singles “Take My Breath”, “Sacrifice”, “Out of Time” and “Less than Zero”.
