2019 has been a year for girl power and self-empowerment. It’s been about making peace with the past and loving yourself at all costs. Things like “Body positivity” and “self-love” have been the buzzwords of the year. These are the albums that led the way.

Cuz I Love You, Lizzo

2019 has been a wild year for Lizzo. After two years under the radar, her single “Truth Hurts” rose to the top of the charts.

Her latest album, Cuz I Love You, is without a doubt one of the best albums of the year. She seamlessly switches between Aretha Franklin bellows and Nicki Minaj rap bars, proving herself to be one of the most versatile and captivating artists of 2019.

What makes Cuz I Love You so iconic is Lizzo’s lyrics. Brilliantly witty and tremendously empowering, there is no album better suited for the ultimate pre-club pink me up.

Norman F***ing Rockwell, Lana Del Rey

Norman F***ing Rockwell may very well be Lana Del Rey’s finest album yet and it is also possibly a contender for one of the best records of the year. Del Rey’s voice is more powerful than ever and her lyrics are crushingly relatable. In the cutting tune “Hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have”, she names herself a “24/7 Sylvia Plath”, candidly opening up about her battles with mental health.

This beautifully raw, musically powerful album is the perfect record for anyone struggling through their 20s.

Thank U, Next, Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande ended 2018 with her highly-anticipated music video for “Thank U, Next”. The album that followed did not disappoint. Full of empowering bangers, Grande proved herself to be one of the most iconic pop stars of the year. A real highlight of the album is “7 Rings” which is officially the song we now sing in our head every time we use contactless to pay for something.

When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish has been the most well-received newcomer of 2019. Her debut album is full of bangers and wow, that girl has talent. “When The Party’s Over” showcases her incredible vocal range and tracks like “Xanny” experiment with different vocal techniques to create a sound that is a little different.

Whether you are a fan of Eilish or not, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? is one of the best pop debut albums we have reviewed in a while. It is full of anthems and above all else, it is original.

Lover, Taylor Swift

Whatever you thought of Taylor Swift’s latest album, the critics pretty much unanimously praised it highly. The record offers a new side to Swift’s music, revealing a Swift that is very much in love. The “You Need To Calm Down” singer took home multiple awards for Lover and added a whole host of new bangers to her repertoire.
