Michigan is one of the albums that put Sufjan Stevens on the map, and it’s almost been two decades since it came out. The indie sensation will celebrate its 20th anniversary by releasing a special edition vinyl, featuring some rarities and unreleased songs.

Stevens joined forces with Third Man Pressings for the 20th-anniversary reissue of Michigan, which will come in three shades: the Great Lakes Blue edition, the University of Michigan/Michigan State AKR edition, and the 1921 Centenary edition.

The new version will feature several songs that even Stevens’ most passionate fans never got to hear, including alternate versions of “Romulus” and “Vito’s Ordination Song,” and never-before-heard cuts like “Marching Band” and “Wolverine”.

This concept album was originally released on July 1, 2003, and Stevens used it to honor his home state of Michigan. It was supposed to be a part of the singer’s Fifty States project and it was followed by Illinois in 2005, but Stevens later admitted this was just a promotional gimmick and that he never actually intended to release 50 albums about all the US states.

The Michigan reissue wasn’t the only thing keeping Stevens busy recently. His latest studio album Reflections hit the shelves last month, and his 2005 album Illinois is currently being turned into a stage musical.
