We all have fond memories of the times when Ne-Yo crushed the charts and our iPods in the 2000s, with songs like “So Sick,” “Because of You” and “Miss Independent.” Then, Ne-Yo released two albums in the 2010s, and we felt that something is missing.

Now, the Grammy Award-winning artist is about to release his seventh studio album, and we have to say, the feeling is changing. Especially after hearing his new single “Good Man.”

“Good Man” follows the recipe that made Ne-Yo’s early songs so good. It is a simple love song, in which this R&B mastermind opens about his feelings in a genuine way. He wants to be a better man for his girl and put her above everything singing:

“I wanna be chillin with Obama talkin’ business and see you callin’ and tell him, ‘Hold up I gotta take this'”.

How can you not relate to that?

Also, the hook of the song immediately gets you. It will make you hum “I just wanna be a good man, good man to you, girl” all day. Combine that with a sample of D’Angelo‘s “How Does It Feel” and you got yourself a real R&B gem.

Of course, everything isn’t perfect, since Ne-Yo’s occasional unorthodox and almost mumble-like singing spoils the overall impression of the song. We hope that was just an experiment he tried.

If his upcoming album is just as good as “Good Man,” then we can safely say that Ne-Yo will hit a home run. The song is catchy, bursts with emotion and serves as a perfect guideline for every man on how to treat a lady.
