Dua Lipa gave us one of the defining pop albums of the 2020s with Future Nostalgia and set the bar high for whatever she decides to do next. Mark Ronson got to hear snippets of her third studio album while they worked together on the Barbie soundtrack and revealed it sounds “incredible”.

Ronson recently set down with Variety to discuss Barbie: The Album, which he produced. Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” was released as the soundtrack’s first single, and he explained that she was the right artist to record this song because it felt Future Nostalgia–adjacent, adding it has “an energy, but it’s kind of tough and weird”, like all the best disco songs.

The “Uptown Funk” artist also revealed that he got to hear some parts of Lipa’s upcoming third studio album while they were working together on Barbie.

“I’ve heard some of it and it’s incredible. I think that’s why there’s the disco ball that smashes in the video, right? This feels like her triumphant stomp on that era of her music into whatever she does next,” said Ronson.

Lipa mostly collaborated with other artists since the release of Future Nostalgia, including Elton John and Megan Thee Stallion, and “Dance the Night” is her first and only new release of 2023 so far.
