Madonna is no stranger to paying tribute to famous historical figures with her music, and she used the video for her latest single “Dark Ballet” to honor the French heroine Joan of Arc.

Madonna’s latest video was directed by Emmanuel Adje and it sees Mykki Blanco taking on the role of the courageous heroine who was burned at the stake after being accused of witchcraft and heresy. “Dark Ballet” shows her bravely facing adversity while she awaits the impending doom.

This song will be featured on Madonna’s highly-anticipated new album Madame X, and the singer explained why she decided to dedicate the video to none other than Joan of Arc.

“She fought the English and she won, still the French were not happy. Still, they judged her. They said she was a man, they said she was a lesbian, they said she was a witch, and, in the end, they burned her at the stake, and she feared nothing. I admire that,” said the Queen of Pop in a statement.
