Emo music was a huge hit during the 2000s, and it’s been experiencing an unexpected revival in recent years. Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong recently opened up about this phenomenon and shared his thoughts about the recent renaissance of emo music.

Armstrong recently set down for an interview with The Guardian alongside his bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool. At one point, they were asked how they felt about the revival of 90s/00s punk and emo music in the last few years, and the Green Day frontman shared some interesting thoughts.

“I think streaming and the way things go viral now [is fuelling it]… Emo was dead – then just five years later we’re having emo club nights. Like, aren’t you supposed to wait another five years for this? My Chemical Romance just broke up!” joked Armstrong.

He singled out The Walters and Deftones as two bands whose emo-leaning music experienced a huge boom after their songs started showing up in TikTok videos. He added that there’s “this new algorithmic way of discovering new stuff”, where people are paying less attention to radio and other traditional platforms.

Green Day’s next album Saviors will be released on January 19, 2024, and it was preceded by singles “The American Dream Is Killing Me”, “Look Ma, No Brains!”, and “Dilemma”.
