Enough with Producing: Grimes Feels She Has Earned the Right to “Just Sit Around and Sing”

Grimes next album Miss Anthropocene is likely to come out this year, and according to her, she’s more focused on singing than on production this time around:

“I feel like, for the first time, I’m really seeing myself as a singer, which is something I’ve never really done before,” Grimes told Zane Lowe on Apple’s Beats 1. “And it actually feels really good to just sing.”

The 31-year-old Canadian started out as a DIY musician who produced her own songs, so it’s no wonder that she graduated to producing her own albums. But it seems that in the four years since her previous album, Art Angels, she has grown to accept herself as more than just a producer.

“Because I’ve always just been so pushing that [singing] part of myself away because I’ve been like, ‘I’m a producer first,’” she explained. “I think as a female, it’s important to foreground the producer stuff. But I feel like I’ve just done that. And also, besides, i_o produced the rest of this album so it’s like…I feel like I’ve just earned my 10 minutes to just sit around and sing.”

Not much is known about the upcoming album, but in a now-deleted Instagram post the producer/singer described it as “about the anthropomorphic Goddess of climate change: A psychedelic, space-dwelling demon/ beauty-Queen who relishes the end of the world.”
