Ed Sheeran has been doing a great job teasing his new album Subtract and he just gave us another piece of the puzzle. The emotional music video for his new song “Boat” is here, and it sees the singer getting swallowed by a wave of sadness.

The Mia Barnes-directed visual was filmed on a British beach, and it will tug at your heartstrings even though it’s not extremely plot-driven. We see Sheeran being crashed by waves of a different intensity throughout the video, meant to convey his pain and grief.

The boat from the song’s title clearly symbolizes the singer’s depression, but the lyrics also perfectly capture his determination to overcome it.

“I was looking out at the sea, and we saw waves crashing down. I sort of felt like, that was a good metaphor of what was happening, at the time with me. And that’s where the line “The waves won’t break my boat” came from,” Sheeran told Subtract Sundays.

“Boat” serves as the second single from Sheeran’s upcoming fifth studio album Subtract. This record will hit the shelves on May 5, and the standard edition will feature a total of 14 tracks, including the lead single “Eyes Closed”.
