Muna have shared an edgy synth pop single and it’s low key lit.
Muna are a strange hybrid that crosses synth pop with emo lyrics. The new single opens with the lyrics: “So I heard the bad news / Nobody likes me and I’m gonna die alone / In my bedroom, looking at strangers on my telephone.”
In the music video, Katie Gavin is chased by a crazed fan whose obsession has gone too far. When she sees the fan up close, however, she realizes that her “number one fan” is actually herself.
“Number One Fan [is] a song about recognizing the negative voices in your head and learning to speak back to them,” the band shared in a press release. “It’s a joyful and surprising experience to recognize that, just as we can all be our own biggest haters, we can also decide to be our own biggest fans.”
Muna’s sophomore LP Saves the World will be released via RCA Records this September.
