]]>The Cliqua-directed visual opens with a close-up of Madonna, delivering the song’s opening line “I’ve seen the devil/ Down Sunset/ In every place/ In every face,” before shifting to the aerial shots of a lavish hillside mansion hidden deep in the mountains.
As the video progresses, we watch The Weeknd, Madonna, and Playboi Carti living their best lives, enjoying their own luxe spaces, while delivering their verses.
“Popular” had a pretty complicated rollout long before its lavish music video hit the shelves. It was initially meant to be released as a part of the soundtrack of The Weeknd’s HBO series The Idol. He even told Zane Lowe that Madonna was “the ultimate co-sign for this song, for this album, and for this TV show” because she’s the ultimate pop star.
“Popular” was eventually released on June 2, 2023, on the deluxe edition of the Weeknd’s greatest hits album The Highlights. It managed to hit the top ten in several countries around the world, including the UK, Canada, and Australia.

]]>The Weeknd recently set down with Variety to discuss his HBO show The Idol and his plans for the future after this project. The Canadian singer revealed that he has a new album on the way, which will serve as a companion to his recent LPs After Hours and Dawn FM.
“I’m finishing the third part of this of this saga, of this trilogy. The name of it will come out soon, but it’s not called what some fans think it’s called… what they think it’s called is actually a song on the album, but that’s not what the actual album is called,” said The Weeknd.
The singer’s fifth studio album Dawn FM came out in January last year, and he’s been pretty busy since its release. In addition to making a shift to acting with his role in The Idol, The Weeknd recorded, wrote, and produced multiple songs for its soundtrack, including “Double Fantasy” ft. Future and “Popular” ft. Playboi Carti and Madonna.
