]]>In the new visual for “Batuka”, the Queen of Pop can be seen joining forces with all-women group Orquestra Batukadeiras. This was her way of honoring batuque – a style of music and dance which originated in the former Portuguese colony Cape Verde.
Madonna discussed this video in a recent interview with Refinery29 and said her main goal was to honor these women and their journey with an organic and beautiful cinematic experience.
“It wasn’t easy to replicate the significance of our first meeting and how it all happened. How they invited me in and gave me a leather drum, sat me down and said ‘Join Us.’ They took turns dancing and embracing me. They invited me into their world and made me feel extremely welcome,” she said.

]]>Madame X easily topped the chart with 95,000 album-equivalent units sold since its release on June 14th.
Bruce Springsteen made it to no. 2 with his new album Western Stars, and was closely followed by Billie Eilish’s debut LP When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?, which came out all the way back on March 29th and repeatedly topped the chart.
Madonna did a great job promoting her new album with a series of amazing singles, including the Maluma collaboration “Medellín.”
She discussed Madame X in depth in an interview with Jo Wiley for BBC Radio 2, and explained how her dance teacher Martha Graham inspired her to embrace this nickname.
“She said, ‘I’m going to start calling you Madame X from now on,’ and I said ‘Why?’ and she said, ‘Because you’re like a secret agent. You’re like a spy. Every time I see you, you look different. I pass you in the hallway, I’m not sure it’s you,’” recalled Madonna.

]]>Madonna’s latest video was directed by Emmanuel Adje and it sees Mykki Blanco taking on the role of the courageous heroine who was burned at the stake after being accused of witchcraft and heresy. “Dark Ballet” shows her bravely facing adversity while she awaits the impending doom.
This song will be featured on Madonna’s highly-anticipated new album Madame X, and the singer explained why she decided to dedicate the video to none other than Joan of Arc.
“She fought the English and she won, still the French were not happy. Still, they judged her. They said she was a man, they said she was a lesbian, they said she was a witch, and, in the end, they burned her at the stake, and she feared nothing. I admire that,” said the Queen of Pop in a statement.

]]>“Crave” sees her joining forces with another one in a long series of exciting collaborators – chart-topping rapper Swae Lee.
The visually stunning video for their collaboration, directed by Nuno Xico, opens with another monologue delivered by the Queen of Pop’s alter ego Madame X.
“I am waiting for you. I have always been waiting for you. I’m attracted to danger, I crave it. Don’t we all want what we know is not good for us? What we know might break us in the end? And yet, we fly towards it, always wanting the thing we cannot have.”
Madonna and Swae Lee are later shown trading secret love notes and using carrier pigeons to deliver them to each other. The video ends with them finally reuniting and creating a spark reminiscent of Michaelangelo’s “Creation of Adam” after touching hands.

]]>“Medellin” was unveiled during a live international event hosted by MTV, and the Queen of Pop used it to introduce her new alter ego to the world.
“I will never be what society expects me to be. I have seen too much… I cannot turn back. I have been kidnapped, tortured, humiliated and abused. But I still have hope. I still believe in the goodness of humans,” says Madonna as Madame X in her new single.
The remainder of the video shows Madonna taking on the role of cha-cha instructor, and being swept off her feet by one of her students played by Maluma. We follow their swirling romance which culminates in a lavish, carnival-inspired wedding.
“Medellin” is the first single from her upcoming studio album Madame X, which is scheduled to be released on June 14.

]]>At a Q&A in London (April 24), fans asked the pop queen all kinds of questions about her music and upcoming album. One fan inquired about the line “Allowed myself to be naïve/To be someone I’ve never been” and asked Madonna if that summarizes what “Madame X” is all about.
Madonna responded: “What I mean by that line is naive in terms of not caring what people think. I feel like when I started my career, as an artist, I was naive. There was a good thing about being naive because you don’t think about judgment, you don’t think about what people are going to say, or think about what you’re doing, and you’re free and pure in your expression.
“I wanted to be able to go back to that time in my life when I was just starting out in New York and I didn’t care what people thought and my music really came without listening to all the noise or recommendations or suggestions, or whatever.”
She added: “That is also the time in my life, when I was 19 when I was given the name Madame X. So the whole story comes full circle.”
Madame X will be released on June 14.
