Victoria Monét is no stranger to epic music videos, and her latest is a love letter to some of her favorite artists. She served Y2K nostalgia and paid homage to the likes of Missy Elliott, Janet Jackson, and Britney Spears in the epic visual for her latest single “Alright”.

Directed by Dave Meyers and choreographed by Sean Bankhead, the music video for “Alright” is a love letter to some of Monét’s favorite artists. Janet Jackson’s music video for the song of the same name was a clear inspiration, but Monét also honored Missy Elliott and Britney Spears.

Monét thanked Meyers and Bankhead for helping her bring this music video to life and expressed gratitude to every single person who had their hands on this visual for being extremely passionate from start to finish.

“Alright” was initially released as one of the songs from Monét’s Grammy-winning debut album Jaguar II before being promoted to a single. She said this song is all about freedom and liberation, and that’s why now felt like a perfect time to share its music video with the world.

“This video is a visual presentation of that sentiment through freedom of movement and fluidity between masculine and feminine energy… There’s no better month to release this visual than Pride Month, Black Music Month, and the beginning of summer ’24!” she said in a statement.

The NAACP Image Awards are one of the year’s biggest celebrations of the POC voices in the entrainment industry. They returned to Los Angeles over several nights last week, and the list of winners in the recording categories includes Usher, Victoria Monét, and Chris Brown.

Monét is fresh off winning three Grammy Awards earlier this year, and her domination continued at the NAACP Image Awards. Her debut album Jaguar II was named the outstanding album at this ceremony, defeating Clear 2: Soft Life EP by Summer Walker, For All the Dogs by Drake, I Told Them… by Burna Boy, and The Age of Pleasure by Janelle Monáe.

After winning the trophy for the outstanding new artist at the Grammys, Monét repeated her success at the NAACP Image Awards, beating the likes of FLO, Jordan Ward, Leon Thomas, and October London this time around.

Chris Brown didn’t win any of the main awards, but that didn’t stop him from topping the list of winners in the recording field with three trophies, thanks to his collaborations “How We Roll” ft. Ciara and “Sensational” ft. Davido and Lojay.

Usher was named the outstanding male artist and won two special awards – entertainer of the year and the honorary President’s Award for special achievement and distinguished public service.

One great song is sometimes all it takes to put an artist’s name on the map, and our favorite rising stars learned that first-hand this year. From Victoria Monét’s “On My Mama” to Tyla’s “Water”, we’re bringing you five breakout hits that took the world by storm in 2023.

Kenya Grace – “Strangers”

Kenya Grace was a complete unknown just a few months ago, before her breakout hit “Strangers” went viral on TikTok, and hit No. 1 in the UK, making her the only female artist since Kate Bush to top the chart with a song performed, written, and produced entirely solo.

Victoria Monét – “On My Mama”

Victoria Monét is one of the candidates for the best new artist at the upcoming Grammy Awards, and her breakout hit “On My Mama” is largely responsible for her success.

PinkPantheress ft. Ice Spice – “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2”

PinkPantheress and Ice Spice went from being relative unknowns to gaining the status of two of the biggest rising stars of their generation after finding viral fame with their smash hit “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2”.

Tyla – “Water”

The South African singer became an overnight sensation thanks to her viral hit “Water”, and she’s currently plotting the release of her self-titled debut album.

Peso Pluma ft. Eslabon Armado – “Ella Baila Sola”

Peso Pluma’s star was on the rise for quite some time, but “Ella Baila Sola” is his first song to find huge global success and make history as the first regional Mexican song to reach the top 10 of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Music videos are an art form in their own right, and they’ve put many amazing songs on the map throughout 2023. From Victoria Monét’s “On My Mama” to Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?”, here are five amazing visuals that caught our attention this past year.

SZA: “Kill Bill”

It’s been a while since SZA dropped the music video for her chart-topping hit “Kill Bill” back in January, but this Tarantino-inspired visual created such a commotion that its impact still lingers almost a year later.

Billie Eilish: “What Was I Made For?”

Billie Eilish has given us one of the most reflective and harrowing songs of the year with “What Was I Made For?” from Barbie. Her self-directed music video did a great job honoring Barbie, while also celebrating some of Eilish’s own past eras.

Victoria Monét: “On My Mama”

Victoria Monét’s “On My Mama” is in the running for record of the year at the upcoming Grammy Awards, and none of that would’ve been possible without its perfectly choreographed, Y2K-inspired visual.

Troye Sivan: “One of Your Girls”

“Rush” is definitely Troye Sivan’s most popular song of 2023, but his transformation in “One of Your Girls” video created even more buzz, along with Ross Lynch’s unforgettable cameo.

Olivia Rodrigo: “Vampire”

Olivia Rodrigo set the stage for her second studio album Guts with the lead single “Vampire”. The music video for this song took us on a wild ride, from its peacful start to its bloody finish.

It’s always fun to watch our favorite emerging artists finally come into their own and share their debut albums with the world. From Victoria Monét and PinkPantheress, many rising stars finally released their first LP this year, and here are five that knocked it out of the park.

Boygenius – The Record

Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus all have a pretty impressive track record on their own, but they took things to a whole new level with the first album they released together.

Jungkook – Golden

Several BTS members released their debut solo albums this year, but Jungkook’s Golden was the most impressive. It produced hit singles “Seven” ft. Latto and “3D” ft. Jack Harlow.

Victoria Monét – Jaguar II

Victoria Monét is coming into the upcoming Grammy Awards as one of the most-nominated artists of the year, and she owes her success to her debut album Jaguar II and its hit single “On My Mama”.

PinkPantheress – Heaven Knows

After breaking onto the scene with the viral hit “Boy’s a Liar Pt. 2” ft. Ice Spice, PinkPantheress served more Y2K nostalgia on her debut album Heaven Knows and showed the world she’s no one-hit wonder.

Raye – My 21st Century Blues

Raye gave us one of the biggest bangers of the year with “Escapism” ft. 070 Shake, and this song did a great job setting the stage for her long-awaited debut album My 21st Century Blues.
