]]>No album this week created more commotion than Taylor Swift’s Tortured Poets and its companion piece The Anthology. She’s given us 16 new songs on the standard edition and 31 in total, but “So Long, London” is definitely her strongest new release.
This Friday was pretty slow for new releases because most artists wanted to avoid competing with Swift. That didn’t stop Pearl Jam from sharing their long-awaited album Dark Matter, which produced several amazing songs, including “Wreckage”.
The lack of major releases helped our favorite indie and international artists shine, and make it to our list of the best new songs of the week. Hozier’s “Why Would You Be Loved” is definitely worth listening to on repeat, and so are the latest singles by Rachel Chinouriri, Debbii Dawson, Kings of Leon, Kate Nash, and more.

]]>The post Taylor Swift Gets Vulnerable & Vindictive on “The Tortured Poets Department” appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>Swift has been through a lot since Midnight hit the shelves in 2022—and we’re not just talking about her record-breaking The Eras Tour. The singer’s romantic relationship often served as the main source of inspiration for her music, and Tortured Poets continues this trend, but not in a way you’d think.
This is Swift’s first album of new material since her six-year relationship with Joe Alwyn came to an end, and many expected their breakup would be the main subject of this album. Instead of simply throwing Alwyn under the bus, Swift decided to explore many stages of heartbreak on this record, reserving her vindictive quips for a short-term fling with Matty Healy and giving her some of her edgiest lyrics since Reputation.
Tortured Poets is at its strongest when Swift is ready to bare her emotions and get vulnerable, instead of resorting to pettiness. “So Long, London” is the case in point, and it’s one of her most emotional and raw breakup anthems since her magnum opus “All Too Well”.
Her vulnerability doesn’t shine as strongly on the rest of the album, but Reputation fans will appreciate the vengeful tone and audacious nature of some of the album’s buzziest songs, such as “But Daddy I Love Him”, “The Tortured Poets Department”, and especially “The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived”. She also found two pretty great collaborators in Post Malone (“Fortnight”) and Florence Welch (“Florida!!!”).
Swift’s storytelling skills remain as strong as ever on The Tortured Poets Department, but this collection of songs doesn’t feel as cohesive as some of her recent albums. Its synth-pop sound feels repetitive at times, making us wonder if Swift’s collaboration with producer Jack Antonoff has run its course – especially when we compare it with Aaron Dessner’s work on the album’s second volume The Anthology.
The Tortured Poets Department is a solid synth-pop record that bridges the gap between Swift’s several eras. It gives us a moment of boldness, audacity, and vulnerability that continue the singer’s legacy as one of the best storytellers of her generation, but it also feels like a pit stop until the next great thing.

]]>The post Taylor Swift’s Songs Return to TikTok appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>Swift was one of the artists whose songs were pulled from the platform after TikTok failed to renew their licensing deal with Universal Music. The label was seeking fair compensation for their artists and protection from AI and piracy, and they refused to renew their deal after TikTok reportedly refused their conditions.
Music by artists licensed to UMG was removed from TikTok’s General Music Library at the time, affecting the likes of Swift, SZA, Bad Bunny, Harry Styles, Ariana Grande, Coldplay, and Kendrick Lamar. Smaller artists suffered an even bigger blow, losing an important promotional tool that helped them put their music on the map.
Three months later, some of Swift’s songs are back on TikTok, including “Lover,” “Anti-Hero,” “Cruel Summer”, “Cardigan”, and Taylor’s Versions of some of her re-recorded hits. It’s unclear if Swift reached a separate deal with TikTok or if she was able to take this step because she owns the copyright to her music under her Universal deal from 2018.
Swift’s music reappeared on TikTok just in time for the release of her next album The Tortured Poets Department, set to hit the shelves on April 19.

]]>The post 5 New Albums Everyone Will Be Listening to This April appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>It’s been five years since the release of Vampire Weekend’s Father of the Bride, and Only God Was Above Us is shaping up to be a worthy successor, judging by its lead singles “Capricorn” and “Gen-X Cops”.
Girl in Red has given us a taste of her new sound with songs “Too Much” and “You Need Me Now?” ft. Sabrina Carpenter, set to be featured on her upcoming album I’m Doing It Again Baby!
Taylor Swift hasn’t shared much news about The Tortured Poets Department since announcing it at the Grammys, but we know that the standard edition will feature 16 tracks, including collaborations with Post Malone and Florence and the Machine.
Many of our favorite alternative artists will share new albums with the world this April, and St. Vincent’s All Born Screaming is showing a lot of promise so far.
Anitta’s Funk Generation will see her embracing her Brazilian funk roots, and she teased it with several catchy songs, including “Funk Rave”, “Mil Veces”, and “Joga pra Lua”.

]]>The post Post Malone and Florence + the Machine to Be Featured on Taylor Swift’s New Album appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>Swift dropped hints about her eleventh studio album while accepting the Grammy for its predecessor Midnights. She revealed The Tortured Poets Department will hit the shelves on April 19 during the live broadcast, and it didn’t take her long to share its cover and full tracklist.
“Fortnight” featuring Post Malone will open Swift’s next album, but he won’t be her only A-list collaborator on this LP. Florence + the Machine will team up with Swift for the song titled “Florida!!!”
The Tortured Poets Department is expected to feature a total of 17 tracks, with such titles as “So Long, London”, “I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can)”, “I Can Do It with a Broken Heart”, and “Clara Bow”.
In addition to sharing the cover and tracklist, Swift also posted a handwritten note, featuring lyrics, “And so I enter into evidence / My tarnished coat of arms / My muses, acquired like bruises / My talismans and charms / The tick, tick, tick of love bombs / My veins of pitch-black ink / All’s fair in love and poetry…”

]]>Midnights defeated tough competition in SZA’s SOS, Boygenius’ The Record, and Olivia Rodrigo’s Guts to be crowned album of the year at this year’s Grammys. Swift thanked her fans in the emotional acceptance speech and used it to announce the release of her next album The Tortured Poets Department on April 19.
The list of major winners also included Phoebe Bridgers, who walked away with four trophies, including three with Boygenius. SZA, Victoria Monét, and Killer Mike were right behind with three wins each.
As for the big four categories, Swift wasn’t the only one with a reason to celebrate. Miley Cyrus, who picked up the record of the year trophy with “Flowers”, Billie Eilish’s “What Was I Made For?” was crowned the song of the year, while Victoria Monét picked up the award for the best new artist.
The 2024 Grammy Awards were held at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena on February 4, with Trevor Noah returning to host for the fourth time.

]]>The post Taylor Swift Breaks Elvis Presley’s Record, Becoming Soloist With Most Weeks at No. 1 appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>1989 (Taylor’s Version) returned atop the Billboard 200 for a fifth non-consecutive time in the tracking week ending on December 28, during an extremely slow period for new music releases. It soared to No. 1 with 98,000 equivalent album units, including 61,000 in album sales, 36,000 SEA units (48.5 million official streams of the set’s songs), and 1,000 TEA units.
This is the 68th week overall that one of Swift’s albums spent at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, helping her set another major record along the way. She surpassed Elvis Presley to become the solo artist with the most weeks at No. 1 but is still far behind The Beatles, with 132 weeks atop the Billboard 200 overall.
1989 (Taylor’s Version) was released on October 27, 2023, on the ninth anniversary of the original 1989, which produced Swift’s signature hits “Shake It Off”, “Blank Space”, and “Bad Blood”. The re-release was celebrated with two singles: “S–t!” and “Is It Over Now?”, which hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

]]>Swift came into the night with nine nominations and eventually managed to take six trophies home. She was named artist of the year, defeating SZA, Drake, Miley Cyrus, Shakira, Olivia Rodrigo, Jelly Roll, Luke Combs, Usher, and Morgan Wallen.
She picked up five more prizes, including pop artist of the year, best lyrics for “Is It Over Now?”, TikTok Bop of the year for “Cruel Summer”, tour of the year, and favorite tour style for The Eras Tour.
It was also a big night for SZA, who won the night’s biggest award, song of the year, with her smash hit “Kill Bill”, beating the tough competition in Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers” and Olivia Rodrigo’s “Vampire”. She came out victorious in three more categories, including R&B artist of the year, R&B album of the year with SOS, and R&B song of the year with “Snooze”.

]]>The post 2024 Grammy Awards: Taylor Swift Wins Big With “Midnights” & Announces New Album appeared first on Hot Pop Today.

The post 2024 Grammy Awards: Taylor Swift Wins Big With “Midnights” & Announces New Album appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>The post 2024 People’s Choice Awards: Nicki Minaj, Taylor Swift, & Morgan Wallen Among Nominees appeared first on Hot Pop Today.
]]>Wallen and Combs are both contenders for the male artist of the year, alongside Bad Bunny, Drake, Jack Harlow, Jungkook, Post Malone, and The Weeknd. They’ll be in contention for several of the same awards, including the song and album of the year, the male country artist of the year, and the concert tour of the year.
As for Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj, they have both been nominated for the female artist of the year award, but they’ll have to beat tough competition in Beyoncé, Miley Cyrus, Doja Cat, Karol G, Olivia Rodrigo, and Lainey Wilson.
Swift’s nominations are pretty scattered across the categories, and she also scored nods for the social celebrity of the year and the movie of the year with Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, in addition to the pop artist of the year and the concert tour of the year.
The 2024 People’s Choice Awards are scheduled to take place on February 18, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, with Simu Liu hosting the festivities.
